If it's unresponsive, take it to your local Apple Store and see the person at the Genius Bar. I have an ibook G4 10.3.9 and I tried installing 10.4 but in the middle of te process, it stalled. I´ve been trying to restart the computer but I only get as far as the grey screen with the apple icon in the middle and the grey wheel spinning with no end. I tried inserting the original OS X Disc 1 and restarting the computer pressing the C key.

After all this years, my battery still lasts 2h15min (it's the original one and I do take care of the computer hehehe). - After draining the battery in order to give it a 100% recharge, it wouldn't turn on and its fan was spinning at full speed.

Actually, a lot of the time when you see a "spinning wheel of death" after an OS update, and it goes away on restart, it's standard behavior: a few OS X updates cause some activity on the next startup that causes spinning wheel of death for a long time, then an abrupt reboot.
